Build a Voltage Regulator!
Use the circuit below!
This circuit layout ensures the L.E.D.'s are kept at the right voltage no matter how many you add to the circuit or what the supply voltage is. The Switch can be controlled by a servo although PMK in model boats has a useful circuit diagram for making an electronic switch through a spare channel. This can also be used but the switch would be wired up to the negative side of the battery instead.
This regulator will cope up to 1.5 Amps though it is advisable to have a suitable heatsink if your running more than 1 Amp or reducing from 15 or more volts. The output voltage depends on the resistance of VR1, therefore it is better to get a potentiometer to the job.
This circuit demonstrates a 3v output from the regulator to power the L.E.D.s. When testing the regulator always place a load onto it otherwise it will read the same voltage coming out as going in (this is why this circuit contains the L.E.D.s).
